Bailey Avenue Bus Rapid Transit
Description
The Bailey Avenue Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project aims to implement a BRT system designed to improve mobility, transit efficiency, and safety along the Bailey Avenue corridor. The system is designed to optimize bus transit operations while enhancing accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.The project includes: Intersections with Transit Signal Priority (TSP) Systems and Queue–Jump Systems, BRT Stations featuring real–time bus arrival information displays for passengers and ticket vending machines (TVM), and Mobility Hubs which are integrated with the BRT system to support pedestrian and bicycle access, facilitating multi–modal transportation.
NFTA and the City of Buffalo Public Works, Parks, and Streets will collaboratively manage the traffic signal system and bus operations supporting the bus rapid transit system. A TSP
system with video–based vehicle detection technology will be used for signal coordination and real–time monitoring of transit data and bus operations. Video–based detection is connected to the controller where determinations on phase omission and/or extending green are made. Wireless cellular connections will enable data transmission between devices (e.g., signal controllers to the cloud) to centralize data that can be accessed by the TMC, ensuring efficient system operations. Transit vehicles will operate in mixed traffic and with queue jump lanes to leverage the priority signal service, offering the benefits of reduced delays and improved schedule adherence. TSP systems are being installed at intersections along the corridor, enabling buses to receive priority at traffic signals, further reducing transit delays. This complements the dedicated lanes and queue jump systems to deliver a more seamless travel experience.
